A Successful Day at the Links

On Saturday, August 6th, the Brave Will Foundation hosted its first Brave Will Golf Tournament at McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton. Over 55 golfers took to the course to help raise money for the foundation. Thanks to their support, the golf tournament raised over $4,000! As always, the money raised will help the foundation in its efforts to provide support for children with life threatening illnesses and their families. In addition, money raised from the tournament will help our new SOAR program.

Though the skies threatened us with rain all day, we were fortunate to have (mostly) dry weather all day as the golfers drove, chipped, and putted their way through the challenging course. Golfers had a chance to win a Toyota Camry and home theater system on two hole-in-one holes but no one took home the big prizes. Thank you to Toyota of Clifton Park and Ray Supply for offering up those prizes. In addition, an Amazon Kindle and weekend at Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid were given away to two lucky (and skilled) golfers. Our winning foursome took home trophies as well as a few other great prizes.

The Brave Will Foundation would like to thank our sponsors for the day: Toyota of Clifton Park, Pediatric Dentistry of Glens Falls and Bard. In addition, we would like to thank our tee sponsors: Pennell’s Restaurant, Luczak Financial, Cartridge World of Latham, Worlco Group Advisors, and the Court Family.

Thank you to all who golfed and to our volunteers who helped make the day an great success!

Pepsi Refresh – One Week Down, Three to Go…

We’re one week into Pepsi Refresh and currently our idea sits in 18th place. Our idea, which is to provide support for families on the first anniversary of their child’s passing through our SOAR program, will need to finish in the top 15 by the last voting day on August 31st in order to receive a $10,000 award. We’ll need your support each and every day of the month (as well as your friends and family, neighbors, co-workers, etc.) to accomplish our goal.

There are three ways you can vote each day:

1. Visit every day and vote for our idea. You can log in using a Facebook account or you can create a Pepsi Refresh account. If you have both a Facebook account and a Pepsi Refresh account, you can vote twice a day for our idea (or more if you have more than one e-mail account that you can use).

2. You can text 107859 to Pepsi (73774) to cast a vote

3. You can Power Vote using the codes found on the yellow Pepsi bottle caps (or codes found in specially marked 12-pack cases). These Power Votes can count anywhere from five to 100 additional votes.

We apologize in advance for being “persistent”  about this, but the only way to win the $10,000 award is by getting votes and we know we have the supporters out there to make it happen. Thank you, as always, for supporting us and celebrating Will Power!

SOAR – A New Program from the Brave Will Foundation

The Brave Will Foundation is proud to announce the beginning of a new program called SOAR (Steer Onward and Remember). The purpose of the program is to provide support for families on the first anniversary of their child’s passing. Since Will passed away in 2009, every day has had its own unique challenges. However, as we have discovered over the past two years, Will’s “Angel Day” on February 6 often packs a more powerful blow. The foundation began to brainstorm how we could directly help those families facing that day for the first time and consequently, the SOAR program was born.

Right now, the program works with families that have had children pass through the Journeys program at Albany Medical Center, a program that the foundation financially supports. However, SOAR is a program that allows us to give back directly to those families that are facing a very difficult day. Families that are nominated by Albany Med staff are given the opportunity to spend that day doing something that pays tribute to their son or daughter. At the same time, by doing something that honors that child, we are hoping the day can also bring peace, relief and maybe even a smile to the mom, dad, brother, or sister.

Families can choose whatever they want to do on that day–there is no “right answer” for how to spend the day. Some families may want to get away for the day and spend time at their child’s favorite park, beach, or restaurant. Other families may want to do a memorial like a tree planted in the yard or donation made in memory of their child. Others may want to involve friends, while some may want to spend time alone. Only the family will know what is right for them on that day.

In June, we were so proud to be able to support a family that lost their son last year to leukemia. The family and many of their family members and friends gathered in their backyard and released 75 monarch butterflies in memory of their son. The butterfly was very symbolic to this family and was a fitting reminder of the legacy their son left behind. The Brave Will Foundation was able to provide the family with the butterflies, dinner, and a photographer to capture the moments. “Ultimately, that is the gift the Brave Will Foundation provided for us…more good memories to: carry us through the hard days, remind us that we are not alone, and to help assure us that our child will never be forgotten,” said the child’s mother, “In essence they did the unthinkable…they made a dreadful day into a day we now look back upon fondly and remember.”

We are so grateful to be given opportunities to help families on this day and look forward to providing families with an opportunity to “soar” in honor and in memory of their precious child.

If you would like to learn more about the program and how you can help:

  1. Visit our SOAR website:
  2. Share information about the program with others
  3. Pepsi Refresh: Help us obtain funding for the program by voting for our idea this month through the Pepsi Refresh program. We have an opportunity to raise $10,000 for the program by gathering the most votes throughout the month of August. You can visit to vote and can vote up to three times every day (don’t worry–we’ll be bugging you plenty this month about it!). You can also text your vote in by texting 107859 to Pepsi (73774) from your mobile phone.
