TAMPA, Fla. (April 29, 2013) – WellCare Health Plans, Inc. today announced that the WellCare Community Foundation donated $35,000 to the Brave Will Foundation for pediatric hospice and palliative care programs in upstate New York, some of which will support the Journeys pediatric palliative care program at Albany Medical Center. The donation was presented at Brave Will’s annual gala in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
“WellCare supports the Brave Will Foundation in its mission to provide services and support for children with serious illnesses,” said Dr. Richard Petrucci, Medical Director for WellCare of New York. “This support extends to the families, caregivers and communities that care for these children. We are proud to be part of the upstate New York communities’ efforts to help people receive quality, patient-centered care.”
Matt and Tammy Hladun formed the Brave Will Foundation in 2009 after their infant son Will passed away from a rare form of cancer. It is one of the founding sponsors of the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center’s Journeys program, which serves children and families facing debilitating medical conditions. Journeys offers a comprehensive program of communication, support and guidance for improved quality of life and well-being.
“WellCare’s gift to the Brave Will Foundation deserves applause. Their generosity indicates recognition of the critical need for pediatric palliative care services for children with life-threatening or chronic complex medical conditions,” said Dr. Joanne Porter, Director of Journeys Pediatric Palliative Care Team at the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. “We are so grateful for their support on behalf of all the children.”
“Because of the care our son Will received during his treatment, we were able to enjoy every moment we got to spend with him,” said Matt Hladun, founder of the Brave Will Foundation. “Palliative care is more than medicine, it is also about the social, emotional and spiritual care of the child and family. We are grateful that the Brave Will Foundation can play a role in the further development of pediatric palliative care efforts throughout the upstate New York region.”
